My Experience:
Old Sacramento, who knew I would have so much fun when we think of our States Capitol as a place to work, and perhaps not play. Play I did beginning with my stay on an authentic River Boat, the Delta King.
My stateroom on the Delta King was spacious, and comfortable bringing out thoughts of another era. The Delta King is floating, but stationary. Beautiful wood paneling and brass throughout the boat, a regal, spectacular floating vessel she is. Offering fine and casual dining, from Chef Julian Vasquez, I had the best Shrimp Louie Salad ever. Don’t miss the Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre, or just sitting on the deck looking over the waterways or gazing at Old Sacramento, just a ramp from the Delta King to the docks away.
I loved Old Sacramento, about a seven hour drive (if you make a couple of quick stops.) The city dates back to the 1800’s, Pony Express and the gold rush. The sidewalks are made of wood planking, the famous Eagles Theatre is made with ships canvas, the Sacramento History Museum (a must for the underground Old Sacramento tour) and so much more.
I took the amazing underground tour and spent hours at the California State Railroad Museum..my favorite rail car, the mail car…we should all appreciate the transitions our mail delivery has gone through. Easy to walk, lots of interesting and beautiful buildings, plus fun shops, delicious and affordable.
As much as I enjoyed Old Sacramento, my visit to the Crocker Art Museum, is another do not miss!! The new $100 million dollar expansion opens on 10/10/10 and is stimulating, exciting, yet in a very comfortable environment. However, don’t miss the original Crocker House, a beautiful mansion that takes you back in time.
As usual, I did not have enough time to see everything I wanted in Old Sacramento, and am planning a trip back next year during Gold Rush Days. Remember to visit the Old Sacramento Visitors Bureau, it’s about 10 minutes walking from the Delta King, and of course will certainly help you decide where and what you would like to visit. Plus, they have wonderful exhibits there to get you started.
Take casual clothes for sightseeing, and comfy shoes for walking. A nice outfit for a night on the town, and your camera, because I guarantee you’ll be taking pictures or videos.
Sacramento Old and New is definitely and destination for everyone. Heavily into sports, and outdoor activities as well, it’s a great destination for families, honeymooners, singles and ME!
