My Experience:
You’ll find Healdsburg about one hour north of San Francisco, less than half a mile off the 101 freeway. I found Healdsburg to be a delightful, hip, beautiful and friendly community. So much so, that Healdsburg is now my favorite town with a town square.
Founded in the late 1800’s, you wouldn’t know it, except for the beautiful Victorian styled homes. Healdsburg has all the flavors of wine country, with exceptional dining, accommodations and one of my favorite amenities..the town is walkable.
I stayed at the nine room Camellia Inn Bed and Breakfast. My room was spacious, comfortable, with a fireplace and sitting area..with wifi throughout the Inn, the treat of no telephone (we all have cells) or television in my room was heaven. I was able to read, relax, and of course work on-line. If you need a tv fix, you can always visit the lovely television room, which is next to the huge sitting area in a era of it’s own. The food is excellent and Lucy Lewand a wonderful hostess, mastering the art of knowing what her guests want in regards to privacy and conversation.
Ask Lucy about the Inns history, so interesting, and yes there are camellia’s on the property, over 100 of them. As wonderful as the food is at the Inn, my dinner at A Divine Affair surpasses anything I ate in San Francisco. Chef and Owner Kahleen Nowak, is a master in the kitchen, and a real sweetheart.
I had the best, yes the best steamed mussels and clams in broth..ever!! Everything on the menu is fantastic..along with an extensive local wine selection, you’re in for a fabulous evening. You’ll also fine the restaurant, charming with indoor and outdoor seating.
The visitor’s center on Healdsburg Avenue is a must..so many coupons for wine tastings and fun activities, plus they are really nice there! My adventure continued with kayaking on the Russian River, a stones through away. River’s Edge Kayak & Canoe Trips www.riversedgekayakandcanoe.com is the place to go.
The water is not deep so don’t be afraid to swim, take some lunch and enjoy the beautiful river adventure. As much as I enjoyed walking the town (no parking meters if you drive) shopping, dining, looking at art, a treat for me was sitting in the town square- park like atmosphere and people watching…
If you’ve never been to Healdsburg GO!! If you’ve been GO AGAIN! I am going again around Christmas time and can’t wait.
